While cellulite may be visible at any age, it tends to worsen as collagen loss happens in the skin and muscular support structures due to aging. Cellulite can be caused by excess fat, fibrous bands creating puckering, or skin laxity causing ripples, and often multiple factors are to blame. During your consultation at Center for Aesthetics we will discuss your treatment needs and make specific recommendations to get you the best results.
ThermiSmooth may be suggested if you have body skin laxity with or without mild to moderate fat excess. While many patients come to us seeking treatment for cellulite on the abdomen, thighs, or upper arms, often a combination of skin laxity and fat excess is to blame. ThermiSmooth works by delivering radiofrequency energy to heat the skin, resulting in collagen contracture and skin tightening as well as some fat contouring. Treatment can also be applied to tighten skin without affecting fat in the area. Although it does not provide the same body contouring as CoolSculpting or SculpSure, most patients enjoy ThermiSmooth treatments and compare them to a hot stone massage. Usually a course of three to four treatments per area is recommended, and treatments may be performed weekly. Results are often visible within one to two months and continue to progress over four to six months following the final treatment. As with any skin tightening treatment, we recommend regular maintenance sessions to retain your results.
If you have specific fibrous bands inducing deep dimples on your buttocks or posterior thighs, your medical provider may suggest Cellfina. Cellfina is an in-office procedure performed under local anesthesia which uses a suction device to elevate the skin and a horizontal blade to cut the fibrous band causing the dimple. Treatment generally only involves a single Cellfina session, and we may recommend combining this treatment with ThermiSmooth for optimal results. Although Cellfina treatment does not technically require downtime, it will cause bruising and tenderness in the areas treated and sitting down or running may be uncomfortable for up to three weeks. Patients also often experience some initial firmness in the areas where bands were treated and this firmness may take up to three months to completely resolve. Cellfina is best used to target specific deep dimples and is not recommended for diffuse rippling or irregularity to the skin surface.
Subcision is an in-office procedure performed under local anesthesia that uses a needle to undermine and directly cut the band causing the dimple. Subcision is designed to target individual fibrous bands, but may also be recommended for patients with just a few specific areas of deep dimpling. Although Subcision may require more than one session to achieve satisfactory results, treatment for a few bands may be a more cost-effective approach than Cellfina. Bruising, tenderness and some firmness in the treated area are to be expected for one to two weeks after Subcision. Patients with significant fat excess in the areas of cellulite may need to treat the excess fat first to achieve satisfactory results.
CoolSculpting is a simple and effective in-office procedure that reduces unwanted body fat with no sedation or downtime. CoolSculpting uses cryolipolysis technology to freeze fat cells, destroys them permanently. Depending upon the areas being treated, your session may take from 35 minutes to several hours. Results from each session develop over about 3 months, and we often recommend two to four sessions over the first year for optimal body contouring. Although there is no downtime, many patients experience temporary side effects in the treated areas, such as bruising, tenderness, skin sensitivity, numbness, swelling and cramping. While symptoms generally last from ten days to three weeks, CoolSculpting does not limit your physical activity and we encourage you to resume your usual activity level as soon as possible following treatment. CoolSculpting is limited by the size of the applicator, and works well for the initial treatment of pinchable fat in the abdomen, flanks, thighs and arms. Your medical provider may suggest using SculpSure for other areas due to the flexible nature of the applicator in smaller areas.
SculpSure is the latest technology to enter the arena of non-surgical fat reduction. While it also permanently destroys fat cells, SculpSure uses laser heat instead of freezing to do so. The main advantage of SculpSure treatment is that the applicator lays flat on the skin instead of using suction to draw skin into the applicator, allowing for treatment of smaller areas. In addition, there are generally no side effects following treatment, although some patients experience slight tenderness or swelling. Results from SculpSure develop gradually over two to three months, and we generally recommend two to four sessions for optimal body contouring.
For patients looking for rapid and dramatic results, VASERlipo is a surgical body contouring treatment that requires less downtime and discomfort than traditional liposuction. VASERlipo uses ultrasound-assisted liposuction technology to break down fat cells prior to suction, easing the removal of fat and creating a more defined appearance by tightening the skin in the treated areas. Treatment is performed in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia, and requires one to two weeks of downtime. Final results develop over several months following the procedure.
